Day 23
Frozen
June 28, 2012
A girl trudges through the December blizzard. She is Of Summer, with the golden hope of April in her eyes, spring in her heart, wildfires in her hair, and honey in her laugh. But she is lost now in the depths of Winter, and the light in her is freezing amongst the pines and wind and snow.
She comes across a boy, lying half buried in the snow. He is (was?) Of Winter. His hair is black against the snow, his skin pale as death. Frost clings to his brows, draping his lashes in a lacy veil over his closed eyes. His lips are blue, his limbs held rigid by his sides.
The girl Of Summer leans closer – is he breathing? She lets out a warm breath over his frozen face, and suddenly his eyes snap open. They are cut sapphires, seeming to trap her gaze in their crystalline depths, and she stares, mesmerized.
Striking like a snake, his frostbitten fingers have curled around her arm, his chipped and bloody nails digging into her skin, sending slivers of ice into her veins.
For a single moment they are both frozen, mesmerized by the other, she by his eyes, he by the warmth of her skin. Then his blue lips part in a Cheshire smile, his breath a revolting mix of pine and decay, and the spell is broken.
She breaks free of his eyes and screams, struggling to free herself as his touch sends frost through her blood, and she could feel the cold seeping through her body, her blood slows and cools in her veins. Already she is fading, her struggles slowing, and becoming more half-hearted, trapped bouncing off the many facets of his eyes.
Her limbs felt like stone, dragging her down. The fire goes out from her hair, leaving it charred and black. The gold in her eyes has hardened into diamond, and the honey in her laugh to amber. Her blood is freezing in her veins as her hearts flutters frantically, trying to escape the ice.
With a sigh, she ceases her struggles and lies down beside the boy Of Winter, their hands entwined. She shuts her eyes, and lets the poison take her heart.
